July is World Watercolor Month!

Jun 26, 2025

I
’d like to encourage you to try something with me this next month– and in the process perhaps discover some new creativity.  Did you know that July is World Watercolor Month?? And not only that, it’s the 10th Anniversary of the event. So let’s celebrate! How about joining me by painting daily watercolor prompts?

Let me explain a bit. Charlie O’Shields, (the one responsible for getting July designated as World Watercolor Month - WWM), is a wonderful guy who started painting in 2015 to “capture little bits of the world in watercolor and ink” (even though he had not picked up a brush in over 20 years). He had so much fun, he decided to share the joy by establishing Doodlewash, a low key and happy organization to promote all things watercolor, sketching and creativity. He has a huge heart for kids and has written several art books geared for them.  Among other things, he publishes lists of prompts monthly as ideas for daily painting/sketching.

This is my 4th year as an ambassador for WWM, and I’ve happily designed an art pouch and mug in honor of this event. You can purchase the pouches/mugs in several sizes here. And, the best part is 100% of the proceeds go to the International Child Art Foundation - serving underserved kids around the world!!

But I’ve gotten a tad ahead of myself… let me get back to my creative challenge for you and me - the prompts. Whether it’s a single word, a theme, or an object to paint, I have found that these little sparks of inspiration offer big benefits:

- Prompts eliminate decision fatigue. Instead of spending time thinking of what you should paint or staring at an intimidating white page, you can jump straight into painting.

- Daily prompts help establish a routine. Even just 15 minutes of watercolor a day strengthens your skills over time, like a daily gym session for your creativity.

- Prompts often nudge you out of your comfort zone. It’s certainly worked that way for me. I find myself painting textures, colors, or subjects I wouldn’t normally choose—and growing in the process.

- Many artists share their prompt responses online. It’s a great way to connect, find inspiration, stay accountable, and see just how different all the responses can be. I’ll be posting mine on my Instagram/FB pages and would LOVE for you to join me!

So whether you purchase a mug, art bag, or join me in July in painting each daily prompt, I wish you joy and flourishing creativity as we celebrate the wonderful world of watercolor and the big 10 year anniversary of World Watercolor Month.

And if you want to get a head start, you can find the prompts for July already published here.
